What's the next Hunger Games?

It could be the Chaos Walking trilogy.  It has just been announced that the very offbeat screenwriter and director, Charlie Kaufman writer of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation(DVD ADAPTATION) , and Being John Malkovich (DVD BEING) has signed on to write the first screenplay in the Chaos Walking Trilogy.  The Knife of Never Letting Go is the story of a planet where all the thoughts of men and animals can be head as the Noise.  After a young man named Todd discovers a girl named Viola, his decision to save her leads to the discovery of terrible secrets.  The trilogy eventually leads to all out warfare with the after of a planet in the balance.  You can read my reviews of the third book here.  This series has all the makings of a new Hunger Games.  Love, violence, dystopia, questions about the inhumanity of war and all that other great stuff!

Hunger Games, the movie: Will you watch?

The latest trailer for the movie version of Suzanne Collins' mega-popular The Hunger Games dropped this week. It stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, the girl with the deadly archer's aim, as well as Liam Hemsworth as Katniss' hunting buddy Gale Hawthorne and Josh Hutcherson as the bread-baking Peeta Mellark.

Never heard of those actors? Give it time. The Hunger Games has echoes of the same momentum behind it that we all saw behind the Twilight franchise, although there's no sparkly vampires or teen werewolves here: The Hunger Games is about a dystopian future where a totalitarian government requires each of its district to send two young "tributes" to duke out it in Battle Royal-style fight to the finish.

Good news for the Hunger Games fans: Mockingjay delivers in a big way. This might be the best book I read all year. The final volume is as exciting and suspenseful as the first two and the ongoing tragedies and triumphs of the war shape your favorite characters in shocking new ways. This is a brilliant look at what the horrors of war bring to all sides and the impossibility of easy solutions in the face of tyranny. Surrounding all these weighty themes is just an outstanding adventure filled with realistic, vulnerable characters. Collins is brilliant at very quickly establishing and cementing characters in your mind only to destroy them a chapter or two later. It makes for very scary reading because you never feel like anyone is safe. If you haven’t read the previous Hunger Games books then you want to check them out before reading this one. So much of the impact is on how much the characters change for better and worse through the novels. I think this is one of the strongest YA series out there and recommend it to anyone wanting a good series.
